Chenille Cushion- Grey and Beige
These cushions are inspired by the intricate and time-consuming chenille tufting that decorates the lower portion of a Pwo Karen unmarried women's tunic. The cotton yarn is inserted during the weaving process and is then painstakingly trimmed by hand afterwards.
We have chosen to simplify the traditional design in order to create an iconic, “stand alone” or accessory coordinated design statement that will look beautiful in any home or interior setting. Create a new design aesthetic from old, time honoured cultures and traditions.
Handwoven by Pwo Karen artisans working with Sop Moie Arts in Thailand
Designed in collaboration with Kinship and Sop Moie Arts
The textile for this cushion is handwoven by master female artisans from the Pwo Karen people in Sop Moei district of Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand. Each cushion is handwoven by a master artisan and takes days to weave. The cotton yarn for the chenille tufting is inserted during the weaving process and is then painstakingly trimmed by hand afterwards- a process which takes weeks.
It is then sewn and finished at Yalla Trappan in Sweden, an organisation that supports immigrant women coming into Swedish society.
We support and lift women in vulnerable communities and everything is made start-to-finish in a fair trade environment.
Textile traditions remain strong in Pwo Karen culture. Karen traditional dress is well embedded in everyday life, and villagers continue to produce textiles for their daily use. Many Karen women are micro-entrepreneurs and continue their traditional weaving in various districts of Chiang Mai Province. Some textile experts qualify the Karen textiles as being “rudimentary” because of the use of thick cotton threads and the lack of fine and intricate patterns. However, the raw characteristics of their textiles reflect a modern sense of aesthetics.
