Handwoven in Laos by Lao Textiles, Carol Cassidy
Designed in collaboration with Kinship and Lao Textiles
These cushions are handwoven by a team of female master weavers in Vientiane, Laos. Each cushion is hand crafted with the ancient Lao weaving technique of "discontinuous, supplementary weft patterning".
It is then sewn and finished at Yalla Trappan in Sweden, an organisation that supports immigrant women coming into Swedish society.
We support and lift women in vulnerable communities and everything is made start-to-finish in a fair trade environment.
Each cushion is a labour of love, artistry and time. It takes over 3 weeks to complete each textile. The preparation and dyeing of the silk is a meticulous “by hand” process- from cleaning the silk to hand dyeing, threading the loom and preparing the complex pattern system. The weaving itself takes 5 days or about 10 cm/day. A weaver needs to be trained for several years in order to have the skill set to work with discontinuous supplementary weft patterning on a Lao floor loom.
The Climbing Monkey/Tree of Life motif is derived from the Tai Mouey people of NorthEastern Laos. In this textile, the monkey is climbing a coconut palm, considered the tree of life and thus a symbol of longevity.
The Brocade Stripe motif is based on a traditional Lao design that is stylized for a contemporary and modern look.
