Cambodia has a long and rich history in weaving dating back more than a thousand years. Women across southern Cambodia have looms in their homes, and they practice the art passed down from their mothers and grandmothers.
Throughout Cambodia's history, religious principles guided and inspired its arts. A unique Khmer style emerged from the combination of indigenous animistic beliefs and the originally Indian religions of Hinduism and Buddhism.
The diamond shape is one of the most famous traditional Khmer patterns, particularly refined and sophisticated. It is often seen on scarves and garments during official and religious ceremonies, weddings, etc. It is incredibly representative of traditions and cultural heritage of Cambodia.
Handwoven by Khmer artisans working with Weavers Project in Cambodia
Designed in collaboration with Kinship and Weavers Project
There are two main types of Cambodian weaving. Our cushions are woven using a weaving technique, unique to Cambodia that is called "uneven twill". It yields single or two-color fabrics, which are produced by weaving three threads so that the "color of one thread dominates on one side of the fabric, while the two others determine the colour on the reverse side."
The textile for this cushion is handwoven by master female artisans from Weavers Project. It is then sewn and finished at Yalla Trappan in Sweden, an organisation that supports immigrant women coming into Swedish society.
The design technique is called Saori, which originated from Japan. Weavers Project has incorporated this into Cambodian weaving. Traditionally, similar designs are only possible through IKAT weaving. Weavers Project have named it "the modern IKAT" and it is specific to their weavers. Each of the weavers have created the traditional designs and fusing them with the modern designs that they come up with themselves. In other words, each pattern is a story of the artisan who came up with the idea.
